Registration changes
Posted by johnd in Site Admin, Website on March 10th, 2010
Just a quick note about a couple of website changes.
First off, new registrations are now authenticated by a reCAPTCHA process (those boxes where you type a couple of words to prove you are human and not a spambot). This means I don’t have to approve each new member. You have no idea how many attempts there have been to register fake users so this site can be spammed for cheap drugs and Russian brides.
I have also added this process to the comments box, and removed the requirement that you become a member to leave a comment. I’ll review this after a while and see how it’s going.
Old Nick goes mobile!
Well, after a bit of work, the Old Nick website now has a special mobile version for people with iPhones and similar devices.
This should make it a lot easier to keep up with Old Nick while on the road, or stuck in a back dressing room waiting for your big moment.
The details are here, so check it out.
Nasty people….
Well, I suppose it was bound to happen.
Until now, subscribing to this site was a pretty painless exercise. You filled in the form, submitted it, and got your userid and password automatically. However, there are always people willing to ruin it for everyone (thanks to the Former Soviet Union, or whatever they call themselves now).
Because of this, I have had to make the registration process such that I approve each new registration. If I think the registration is suspect, I will not approve it.
The best thing you can do is provide your real name during registration. Most of these attack web sites provide non-sensical names, or none at all.
I’m sorry if this makes the registration process take a bit longer, but I don’t really see any other option.
Looking for an author for our Wikipedia entry
I’ve recently noticed that the Wikipedia entry for Old Nick is really nothing more that a stub. Since I have far too much to do, I’m looking for someone to take on the task of updating this entry. Of course, given what is there, I really mean creating and maintaining the entry (as much as any Wikipedia entry can be maintained).
If you are interested, drop me an email.
Oops … Email subscription problems
We have had a small problem with email subscriptions. If you are not a full registered subscriber to our site, then you will need to subscribe again.
If you are a full registered subscriber to our website, then you need do nothing. A database problem has meant that we have lost only all non-registered email subscribers.
I love computers…..
Way back when….
Just out of interest I thought I would see how the Old Nick website has changed over time. Fortunately, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine is a help. Click here to see the results.
(Note that not everything on the old sites will work.)
Email subscriptions
We’ve added a new feature to the Old Nick website. Now you can get email notifications about new things posted here. Just go to our email subscription page.
Old Nick Production Pictures
Well, after a lot of clicking, the Old Nick historical images supplied by Peter Reardon are up on the site. They are sorted into Revue and Other Productions, and then sorted by year.
There is lots of fascinating stuff here. One interesting thing is the crits for Revue. Regardless of the year, they all seem to carry the same theme!
Now, we need your help! If you have any pictures, info, programs, posters, etc for a show that are not on the site, or info on a show not mentioned (yes, there are some), please take a little time and send them to us. We would really appreciate your efforts.
Old Nick’s New-Look Website
Welcome to Old Nick’s new website!
Time moves on, and so does Old Nick. Our webmaster spent minutes designing a new website, and here it is! Our new site will be much more dynamic, and deliver Old Nick news on-time, fresh, and as flavoursome as you like it. Take some time to poke around, and keep up by subscribing to our RSS feed. It will be worth it, as news will be appearing quite often as more content and new items are added.
Don’t forget our photo page. Photos from Old Nick functions, shows, and anything else we thing you might be interested in will be added in the future. Currently we have photos from the 60th anniversary dinner, and more will follow soon.
And please take the time to leave a comment. We are always interested in what people have to say.
Looking forward to seeing you at the 2009 Revue
Johnd
