Larageddon (Uni Revue 2011)

Old Nick Theatre Company

Theatre Royal, May 13-28,

It’s been a big week for Lara Giddings. First there was all that work stuff. And now Old Nick are blaming her for the ending of the world.

First-time Revue director Mick Lowenstein hangs this year’s Uni Revue on an only-slightly tenuous notion that all the recent global natural disasters have coincided with Lara’s political career. An A-team, led by Will ‘the Hodgmanator’ Hodgman, is mobilised to save us all from Larageddon: The Ultimate Disaster.

Lowenstein structures Larageddon with a strong narrative through-line that’s more plot than theme, and the show hangs together well with still plenty of room for the familiar skit-based non sequitur sketches, jokes and songs. And there are the requisite groan-out-loud puns, running jokes, self-referential and meta comedy, nudie runs, cross-dressers, and North/South taunts and political and pop-culture references.

The humour’s sharp without cruelty, intelligent without weightiness, and, of course, bawdy without apology. It’s a script-based show – don’t expect flashy sets or huge song-and-dance numbers (though there are some middle-sized numbers, and the band, under Musical Director Craig Wood, contribute healthily) – and the writing is enjoyable.

Sophie Tyrrell (Lara) and assistant director Ben Paine (the Hodgmanator) deliver clean, confident performances with plenty of charm, leading a young ensemble cast whose zeal and sincerity make up for what’s occasionally lacking in polish.

I hope it brightened Lara’s weekend.

The Revue is being named after the Golden Globe winning Quentin Tarantino film “Inglourious Basterds” and promises a real Tarantino style look at the recent state election.

Who is Old Nick?

Old Nick is a Tasmania’s premiere amateur theatre company, and has been presenting the annual Uni Revue and other theatre since 1948.

What’s the Uni Revue?

The Revue is an irreverent, satirical parody of topical matters both local, national and international. Essentially, it’s a pisstake of things that have happened in the past year. We take everything from politics to music, TV shows to poo jokes and put them on stage. It’s 90 minutes of singing, dancing and telling jokes.

Do I have to sing, dance or tell jokes?

Yes. You will do at least one of these three things. You don’t have to be good at doing them, you just have to be willing to. There’s also places for people who want to work backstage, in costume, in set design/building, in writing or developing jokes or in the band. Just fill in the form and let us know what you want to do.

Do I have to get naked?

No. Nudity is optional and makes no difference to your place in the revue. In fact, we won’t even ask you about volunteering for nudity until well into the rehearsal period.

What are the requirements for being in the revue?

You must be at least 18 years old.

You must be available for rehearsals and the Hobart and Launceston performances. You need to be free Tuesday & Thursday nights and all day Sunday from March until May. You need to be able to spend a week in Launceston (fully paid for by Old Nick) for the week May 21 – 28.

You need to want to have fun.

Do I have to be a uni student?

No. You can be a student, a full time worker, unemployed or a pensioner. If you’re 18+ and willing to have a go then you’ve got what it takes.

Casinova is done, and the results are presented here. The Unicorn disks are in a bit worse shape, and will take longer to do.

Don’t expect great quality. The recording has a bit of reverb from the venue. I’ve cleaned up the recordings as much as possible.

Announcing the Revue Club. From our newly elected President, Graeme Paine:

“The  first Revue Club meeting will be next Monday 5^th October at 7.30pm at Letitia Street.

The plan is to hold the club on the first Monday of each month at 7.30

The club is open to anyone interested in Revue. Either those who have been in revue or those thinking of getting involved.

The idea of the club is to brainstorm events of the past month, discuss potential material, script development and training.  In the future we might arrange guests to come and give training on various aspects of Revue, such as joke delivery, song writing, set design etc

Anyone interested is welcome to come along.”

So there you have it. This gives you a chance to see what Revue is all about. Believe it or not, it’s not all about crude jokes, rude words, or nudity (though some people believe it should be).

Old Nick is looking for a degenerate pervert talented director to handle next year’s Revue. The Uni Revue has iconic status in Tasmania (and a certain status outside), so we are looking for someone to “maintain the standard”.
