Well, I suppose it was bound to happen.
Until now, subscribing to this site was a pretty painless exercise. You filled in the form, submitted it, and got your userid and password automatically. However, there are always people willing to ruin it for everyone (thanks to the Former Soviet Union, or whatever they call themselves now).
Because of this, I have had to make the registration process such that I approve each new registration. If I think the registration is suspect, I will not approve it.
The best thing you can do is provide your real name during registration. Most of these attack web sites provide non-sensical names, or none at all.
I’m sorry if this makes the registration process take a bit longer, but I don’t really see any other option.

Yes, I know. Everything is my fault. Well, nearly everything. It wasn’t me that invaded Poland…

use a CAPTCHA?

That’s certainly another option, but I had hoped to keep the registration process as simple as possible.

If I send you a photo can you set it as my avatar? It’ll either be a headshot or me giving a thumbs up to a drunk midget. Or a just a drunk midget. Either way I can’t figure out how to set it myself.

Avatars in WordPress (the engine behind this site) are handled by the Gravatar service.
http://en.gravatar.com/
Basically, you go there, associate an avatar with the email address you used to register here, and it automatically displays.
