This is a powerful one-man show, set in a Christian Brothers classroom in the 1950′s. James Casey is a devoted, overworked teaching Brother who has only a well-thrashed chair, a strap, a blackboard, and the audience as his pupils. It is a beautifully developed portrait of a man torn between loving and loathing his students.
The Brothers takes us through a day in his classroom, while sharing insights into his past, the reason that he’s a Brother, and what his hopes are for his students.
Don’t expect a jovial teacher; his strictness towards his students will flood the memories of the “baby boomers”, while bewildering the “generation x and y” in the audience!
The Christian Brothers has finished it’s successful Hobart season, and opens in Launceston on the 22 July as part of Launceston’s 2009 CentrStage season.
